Web 0.5
Keeps what X and LinkedIn can do and removes what they do to you.
What It Does
On the rare occasions I'm forced to look at X, I wanted to do so without the relentless onslaught of visual nonsense. LinkedIn has similarly required me to open up the page to see connections or messages but it seemed challenging to do so without being exposed to psychically damaging vibes. This is a browser extension for Chrome that attempts to address that fairly successfully.
How it works
It does not rebuild anything. The sites keep doing their own search, login and rendering, and the extension only decides what stays visible. Nearly all of it is CSS switched on by the current page, with a little JavaScript for what CSS cannot reach, like keeping X on Following and hiding the LinkedIn popup inside its shadow root. Neither site has stable class names, so it hooks onto test ids, ARIA roles and page structure.
Built with
- Plain JavaScript and CSS in a Manifest V3 extension for Brave and Chrome. No build step, no backend, no permissions beyond running on these two sites.
