Prototype · Routing
Side Streets
A routing prototype that prefers roads with character and penalizes the chain-heavy strip corridors that make so many American drives feel identical.
What It Does
It's a GPS navigation app but it lets you optimize for the most scenic and off-the-beaten track routes.
How it works
It tries a variety of ways to prioritize scenic roads, non-commercial and residential areas, historical districts, parks etc.
Built with
- Routing: Stadia Maps hosted Valhalla (free 200 req/day tier, ~$0.50/1000 after that).
- POI scoring: Overpass API for OSM tag queries along the route polyline.
- Custom costing: Valhalla's
costing_optionsexposed per request. The interesting work is in the weights and the scoring loop, not in writing a routing engine from scratch.
